A buyer legend is a narrative walkthrough of a customer’s buying journey, written as though you are inside their experience step-by-step—from initial awareness to post-purchase advocacy. Rather than presenting data as abstract funnels or bullet points, it tells the story in a human, first-person context, including emotions, questions, hesitations, and motivations.
The purpose of a buyer legend is to reveal friction, confusion, missed opportunities, and conversion gaps that aren’t obvious when looking only at analytics. By dramatizing the experience, it highlights where customers get stuck, what information they need but can’t find, what triggers confidence, and how design, copy, reviews, pricing, or support can move them forward. In essence, it’s both a diagnostic tool and a roadmap for optimization—helping ecommerce teams improve UX, content, product presentation, and retention by seeing the buying journey through the eyes of a real person.
In this example, the document follows “Bob,” a beginner researching telescopes, and traces every micro-interaction he has across search results, website navigation, product comparisons, reviews, checkout, post-purchase onboarding, and long-term engagement.
